STC Mini-Smelter: the low cost and environmentally sound solution for small capacity battery recycling plants

In response to growing global demand for efficient and environmentally sound battery recycling solutions, in this work STC Italy presents a newly developed modular and standardized plant for the complete recycling of spent lead-acid batteries (ULABs). The plant is designed to process up to 15,000 tons of batteries per year, yielding approximately 8,000 tons of refined lead ingots. The system integrates all stages of the recycling chain — from battery breaking to smelting and refining — in a compact, standardized layout. The plant concept ensures maximum operational efficiency, reduced environmental impact and compliance with the Best Available Techniques (BAT). This solution represents a replicable model for decentralized lead recycling in both emerging and mature markets, especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Mr Alberto Bergamaschini

Commercial Director, STC S.r.l.

After obtaining a high school diploma in Industrial Chemistry in Milan in 1981 and completing a postgraduate specialization in Environmental Engineering, Alberto began his career in engineering, design, construction and management of environmental protection facilities, including water, waste water, air, and waste treatment plants.
Since 2000, he has been focusing on providing plants and technological solutions for battery recycling and secondary lead industries, initially as a Project Manager and, from 2010 onward, in senior commercial roles within a prestigious engineering company. Throughout this time, he has actively contributed to the growth and international reputation of the firm he worked with, supporting its development as key player in the industry.
In 2019, he joined STC as Commercial Director.
STC is an Italian engineering and contracting company specialized in the supply of plants, equipment and services for battery recycling, secondary lead production and water and air emission treatment.
Over the course of his career, Alberto has been involved in more than 50 recycling projects worldwide, gaining extensive experience and knowledge in the sector.
